Calendar of Events
Cullen Balch - Cullen spent his early life traveling the U.S. as his family followed work in the construction trades. In the mid 1980's the family temporarily settled in Northern Illinois where Cullen would spend his formative years. It was during this era Cullen was really introduced to hip hop culture and rap music. Instantly drawn to the rhythm heavy tracks and emphasis on word play he was in love, of especial interest was the political messages of groups like Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, and The Stop the Violence Movement. Growing up in a rural area outside of a large city hip-hop was accessible but not acceptable, that changed drastically in 1995 when Cullen moved to Chicago to attend art school. Immersed in art, the city and music he was encouraged to embrace public performance after sharing work from his journal with musician and DJ friends. Returning to Rockford Illinois in 2000 Cullen and began performing regularly at open stages, poetry slams or any other venue he could find for his art, by 2004 he had 2 city wide poetry slam titles, had helped found educational/performance poetry troupe "Poetic Justice League 4 America" and created/hosted a long running 1 of a kind weekly hip hop open stage. Over the next 3 years he toured the Midwest with PJL4A opening for artists like Talaam Acey and Saul Williams, formed his first true live band hip hop project "The Bizarro Beat Circus" and represented Rockford in the 2005 National Poetry Slam in Albuquerque, NM. In 2007 he left the Midwest for the Great Northwest where he reunited with long time friend and former band mate Pete Sandona to create funky dance jams with lyrical substance.
Ruth Moss came up in the San Francisco Bay Area during the rawest days of Hip-Hop and R&B; she fell in love with the jams on the local Oakland radio station, KMEL. Sold on the fresh beats of the early 80's, Ruth became a fan of spoken word when it was still the spoken word of the streets She began experimenting with music at a young age, playing the organ, woodwinds, and drums, but it was always the written word - its power in truth that fueled her artistic projects and got her start as a spoken-word artist. While living in Austin, TX as a teenager, Ruth was turned on to the live music scene and was influenced much by female songwriters like Beth Orton, Patti Griffin, Patti Smith, and Lucinda Williams. In 2003, Ruth collaborated with Bay Area musicians for the first time in a project dubbed “The Gang”. In 2006 she recorded “Fine, Fine Line”, a collection of original songs which included collaborations with other musicians and in which she co-produced as well. Performing with Collective Love Unlimited has allowed Ruth to focus more on expanding her style while creating outstanding hooks and tight-fitting back-up vocals. With the high energy and conscious vibe that Collective Love Unlimited brings, she sees the project as a powerful catalyst for positive social change and shifting consciousness in Hip-Hop music.
Jeremy Nelms- Jeremy was raised in the LA area and has been playing the drums since he was 13. He got his first taste of the music scene at 17 when he was part of local street teams for upcoming bands like System Of A Down, Static X, and Hed PE. After re-locating to Washington State, Jeremy played drums with ‘The Illuminaughties’, a regional band that was a favorite among local radio DJ’s. Jeremy has also drummed for ‘Big Blue Van’ a popular Olympia, WA reggae-rock band, which played to a sold-out crowd opening for ‘LBC’ (formerly Sublime). Jeremy brings a high energy snap with his playing and adds the So Cal groove to the mix.
Kevin Norton-Born in Philadelphia, Kevin began playing and performing music at age 7. Beginning with piano at age 6, and gravitating towards bass and electric guitar, Kevin has kept himself busy playing with just about every genre of music he could find: Jazz, Reggae, Rock and Roll, Folk, Blues and Country, with a primary focus on original composition. Feeling that it was time to shift attention more towards dance oriented/hip hop style music, Pete and Kevin began the discussing what would eventually lead to the formation of Collective love Unlimited. Self studied in audio engineering and recording, he was a co-founding member of the Grammy nominated Utah Philips tribute act, Fast Rattler. To date Kevin has composed nearly two hundred original compositions, worked on various recordings and has traveled and preformed around the continental US and Canada.
Pete Sandona hails from Rockford, IL home of rock legends “Cheap Trick”. Inspired at a young age by his older cousin who played guitar, Pete learned how to play one in high school. He eventually decided to switch to bass and he cultivated his talent in Rockford’s oldest bar, “Mary’s Place”, which hosted open stage twice a week. With many eclectic and talented musicians around him and encouraging his skill, Pete’s experience playing there has gifted him with the ability to play numerous styles of music. A talent he put to use in many local bands with styles ranging from blue grass, gypsy swing, psychedelic jam, classic rock, funk and hip-hop. Pete re-located to WA in 2005 and broke into the local music scene where he met and played with many area talents. In 2007 he co-founded Collective Love Unlimited with his friends and colleagues as an outlet for social commentary and funky hip-hop hooks.
